GTA 6 Will Make You Earn Cash to Advance the Story, Rockstar Confirms

Broke in Leonida? Then the story may have to wait. In IGN's newly published full interview, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will sometimes require Jason and Lucia to earn money in the open world before the main mission flow can continue. The comments surfaced this week, as GamesRadar+ reported on October 7, just six weeks before the game's November 19, 2026 launch.

What Rockstar actually said

Nelson's key line to IGN: "We have made money matter more in this story than I think it has in previous GTA games." He added that "there will be parts of the game where you need to make money to advance the mission flow."

That is a real change for the series. In past GTA games, cash mostly paid for guns, cars and property, while story missions unlocked simply by finishing the previous one. In GTA VI, at least some story beats are tied to how much money the duo has.

How you'll make the money

Nelson named two methods in the IGN interview:

  • Boosting and selling cars: steal a vehicle and move it on for cash.
  • "Sticking places up": robbing stores and other businesses around Leonida.

Hitbox Magazine, summarizing the demo shown to IGN, adds some detail:

  • The map shows a list of robbery targets, which can be hit as a pair or solo.
  • A car fence asked for a specific model sitting in a police impound.
  • Damaged cars pay less, so repairing a ride before delivery is worth it.
  • One stolen car carried a tracker that alerted police whenever Jason drove too slowly.

Jason and Lucia stay connected

The same interview confirmed you can text or call the other protagonist at any time. Per IGN, if you spend a whole day as one character, the other may text you before heading to bed, and ignoring messages "may impact your relationship a bit." It's a small detail, but it suggests the money grind and the relationship between the two leads are meant to feel linked.

What we still don't know

Rockstar hasn't said:

  • How often story progress is gated behind cash.
  • How much money each gate requires.
  • Whether other activities pay better than car boosting or robberies.

Until launch, treat any specific figures you see online as unconfirmed.

What's next

Our early advice: when the game is out, don't skip side hustles. A healthy bank balance could be what keeps the story moving.
