Why GTA 6 Took 8 Years: Rockstar Confirms Project Americas, an NPC Studio and More
Rockstar almost never talks about how its games get made, but on October 14, 2026 it opened the doors for Bloomberg Businessweek. Jason Schreier's feature, reported with Rockstar's cooperation, explains why Grand Theft Auto VI took more than eight years: a far bigger original plan, years of AI work, pandemic setbacks and a cast of NPCs that forced a delay. The release date hasn't moved — still November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
It started as "Project Americas"
The long-rumored codename is real. According to Polygon's summary, Bloomberg reports the game was called Project Americas because it aimed to cover large areas of both North and South America. That scope was later narrowed to Miami and its surroundings — the Vice City and Leonida we know now. Polygon says the overly ambitious start helps explain the delays.
Production also got stuck behind Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar planned to build both games side by side, but co-studio head Rob Nelson had to pull most of the company onto RDR2, pushing GTA VI back several years, Polygon reports. Nelson called one stretch "a dark period."
Realism, AI and remote work
Nelson told Bloomberg the team struggled to define how much realism players would expect, using the example of simply drinking a beer, per Polygon. Making Jason and Lucia work as a true couple meant building complex AI systems — "the traditional kind, not ChatGPT," as Schreier put it — which took years.
The pandemic hurt too. Polygon notes that performance capture needs people in the same room, and staff working from home weren't allowed to access Rockstar's servers and tools because of privacy concerns.
An NPC studio — and a delay
After the 2023 reveal, leadership realized the game's NPCs would need far more time and manpower than planned. Rockstar built a studio dedicated to non-playable characters, and The Verge says that contributed to the delay. Head of development Phil Hooker put it bluntly: "We could hit that schedule, but it won't be the game we want to make." That fits what we heard earlier about Rockstar's dedicated pedestrian dialogue team.
Budget and headcount
Rockstar shared no budget figure. Per Polygon, head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe "did shoot down a popular rumor that it surpassed the $1.5 billion it cost to build Dubai's Burj Khalifa." Schreier still argues it's likely the most expensive game ever made. Rockstar has grown from 2,441 employees around RDR2 to 4,711 across 12 offices, GameSpot notes.
The next game should be faster
Hooker told Bloomberg that "the engine, the tools, and the team we've built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly," GameSpot reports. The Verge points to GTA III and Vice City, released about a year apart. No new game has been announced.
Two new screenshots
The feature also came with two new official stills, Rockstar Report notes: Jason and Lucia covered in mud at an off-road gathering, and a police helicopter chasing a green supercar on Ocean Drive.
