MW4 Won't Hit Game Pass Until Holiday 2027 — Campaign Early Access Starts Today
If you were planning to play Modern Warfare 4 through your subscription, plan again. In an October 15 post on the official Call of Duty blog, Activision confirmed that MW4 launches October 23 as a standalone release and "will not be available on Game Pass at launch." To play on day one you have to buy the game, and the blog says it "will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027."
The timing is notable: the news landed the day before Campaign Early Access opens today, Friday, October 16, for everyone who pre-ordered a digital edition.
What the Game Pass change means
- No day-one subscription access. Per the Call of Duty blog, MW4 is a separate purchase at launch on every platform, Xbox included.
- Holiday 2027 is the earliest Game Pass window. That's roughly a full year after release, based on the same official post.
- Older CoD games stay. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep access to Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III, the blog adds.
- Xbox pre-orders go through the Xbox Store on console, the Xbox app on PC and the Microsoft Store.
What digital pre-orders include
The blog and Activision's Editions page list the same pre-order bonuses for every digital edition:
- Campaign Early Access from Friday, October 16 (PT)
- DMZ Early Access from Tuesday, October 20 (PT)
- Hunter Killer Operator Skin (usable in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, and in MW4 at launch)
- Gilded Pearl Weapon Camo Pack
- Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint. On Xbox Series X|S it gets a translucent "OG Green" look to mark 25 years of Xbox.
Physical editions don't get early access. Activision ties both early access windows to digital editions, and Forbes (via Yahoo Tech) lists Physical Standard as "No" for Campaign Early Access. If you're new to the early access setup, our Campaign Early Access guide covers it.
When the campaign unlocks today
Activision gives only the date in Pacific Time. PC Guide, citing Activision, reports the unlock at 10 AM PDT / 1 PM EDT (6 PM BST in the UK). Early access covers every platform, Nintendo Switch 2 included, according to the Editions page. Haven't downloaded yet? See our preload and global release times.
The campaign is set during a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. A squad of young South Korean soldiers fights on the front line while a vengeful Captain Price runs an off-book war of his own, as described in Activision's synopsis. Forbes reports that the villain is The Archer, played by Mads Mikkelsen.
